Arts, Culture & Design
We understand that arts and design are often intimately connected to innovations in science, engineering, and business. ECU is a leader in the STEM + Arts = STEAM movement.
Major new investment is flowing into our arts & innovation district. On Dickinson Avenue, art studios and graphic design shops coexist with makers spaces, artisanal manufacturing, and light industrial. Just down the street, ECU is renovating an historic tobacco warehouse and is building a new $90 million Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building.
But our love for the arts goes beyond business and innovation. The arts enhance quality of life and place making, attract visitors and new talent. Our vibrant local art scene is supported by the Greenville Museum of Art, Emerge Gallery, and ECU’s School of Art and Design. As an example of our commitment to culture the S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series features jazz artist Branford Marsalis, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, and the Russian National Ballet Theatre. There are many events that include artists such as Carol Dasheill, Smashmouth and Billy Taylor. The historic Uptown Theatre will host live music, community theater, and other live entertainment acts.
